ROSWELL, N.M. – The world famous Roswell "incident" was no UFO but rather a Russian spacecraft with "grotesque, child-size aviators" developed in human experiments by Nazi doctor and war criminal Josef Mengele, according to a theory floated by investigative journalist Annie Jacobsen.

Her book, "Area 51: An Uncensored History of America's Top Secret Military Base," is about the secretive Nevada base called Area 51. One chapter offers the new Roswell theory, citing an anonymous source who says Joseph Stalin recruited Mengele and sent the craft into U.S. air space in 1947 to spark public hysteria.

Like past theories, Jacobsen writes that the U.S. government was involved in a cover-up of the UFO report, which has spawned space alien legend and turned this southern New Mexico town into a tourist attraction.

Bill Lyne, who self-published a book called "Space Aliens from the Pentagon" in 1993, agrees that the Roswell incident was faked, but he thinks the hoax was perpetrated by the U.S. government — not the Russians.

"They're just saying what I've been saying all along, that it was a hoax," he told the Santa Fe New Mexican. "But that Mengele stuff is a bunch of hogwash because Mengele was recruited by the CIA (rather than the Russians), and he was actually brought to Albuquerque."

Clifford Clift of the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, in Greeley, Colo., said he has not seen Jacobsen's book but has read other articles that suggest the Roswell incident involved German technology.

"After researching the claim, I found little truth in this theory," he said. "It is a stretch. One of my concerns is if they wanted to create panic, why in New Mexico and not New York where there are more people to panic? I would suggest it is another conspiracy theory and, heavens, MUFON knows about conspiracy theories. They do sell books."

Jacobsen, a contributing editor the Los Angeles Times magazine, told NPR that said she knows people will be skeptical.

"But I absolutely believe the veracity of my source, and I believe it was important that I put his information out there because it is the tip of a very big iceberg," Jacobsen said.

Julie Schuster, executive director of the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell, told the Albuquerque Journal she hasn't read the book. But any new theories fuel public interest, and that's terrific, she said.

"Every time something new comes out, it piques somebody's curiosity somewhere, and the come to Roswell, and they come to the museum," Schuster said.

New Zealand releases UFO government files

New Zealand's military has released hundreds of documents detailing claims of sightings of unidentified flying objects (UFOs).

The files, dating from 1954 to 2009, include drawings of flying saucers and alleged samples of alien writing.

The files include details of New Zealand's most famous UFO sighting when strange lights were filmed off the South Island town of Kaikoura in 1978.

An official report from the time said natural phenomenon could explain it.

Although the incident made international headlines at the time, the military report suggested it could be lights from boats reflected in clouds or an unusual view of the planet Venus.

Following the release of the files, New Zealand Air Force spokesman Kavae Tamariki said the military did not have the resources to investigate UFO sightings and would not be commenting on the documents' contents.

"We have just been a collection point for the information. We don't investigate or make reports, we haven't substantiated anything in them," he told the Dominion Post newspaper.

The reports have been released under freedom of information laws after officials removed names and other identifying material.

The files - which run to about 2,000 pages - include accounts by members of the public, military personnel and commercial airline pilots describing close encounters, mostly involving moving lights in the sky.

All the original documents on which the reports were based are to remain sealed in the national archive.

It's been ages since I've been on here. But while I was waiting at the shop for my mechanic to finish test driving my car, one of the other mechanics showed me this video and I've been reeling from it ever since:

It's prompting a huge debate between me and my cubemates in the office. I say they are UFO's while others stick with the NASA claim that its just space debris. But could space debris look similar in shape (notice that they look like donuts with a bite in them) and move the way they do in space. Also I've noticed some of the "debris" pulsating.

What would you say it is?

Creation Lightship to me is God. The dark is satan.
There is evidently good and bad in everything - even aliens.
I was so getting into accepting aliens - now, you don't know who to trust.
It's so confusing.
Is anyone thinking this?
My right thumb does feel alot better though since I listened to this man.
And I feel sharper in the mind.
Go figure.

I get alot of paranormal and UFO podcasts that I listen to when I am at work. I came across the paracast. www.theparacast.com . They had a guest on named michael horn, and he supports some guy named billy meijer. These guys are ufo cultists with their own religion and everything. I was wondering if you have heard of these guys and what do you think about them? I think they are a fraud personally. I emailed that mike horn guy to let him know he is a nut and so far he has emailed me about 30 times threatening and insulting me. I love getting this guy so rilled up.

I don't know if you've tried this yet, but try searching UFOs on Google Video, or let me do it for you: UFO Search.

You come up with all sorts of strange stuff. Some of it possible legitimate footage, others just fun. So give it a try, and if you find any good ones, post them here for us!

I recently finished reading Top Secret/Majic 2nd Edition by Stanton Friedman. It's a good read. He is very meticulous with his research and has been researching Roswell for a number of decades.

Pick it up if you get a chance.
