By Skullfarmer at August 7, 2006 - 1:41pm | General Webster says: But ... there are plenty of things that science cannot explain that we do not see as paranormal or supernatural. For instance, is the origin of life paranormal? Are emotions paranormal? Are unexpected weather changes paranormal? I see it like this: Science was born out of what we call 'observable fact.' Newton dropped an apple, it was subjected to the gravitational pull of the earth, it was effected by gravity, tests were completed to subject other stuff, it became the Laws of Gravity (obviously paraphrased). We accept this, generally, as solid scientific method, via observable fact. Now, my quandary is this; if we have the five natural filters of our senses then I believe that we are pre-disposed to believe that nothing exists outside of those parameters (save for God/Satan, for some). It would seem to me that two options exist from here. Option 1 is that we should believe that nothing exists outside the realm of our senses (scientifically provable) and that humankind is the center of the universe. Option 2 would then be that we believe that things do exist outside of the realm of our senses and we are only a subset of a larger picture (centered elsewhere). There isn't a whole lot of gray area between those two statements that I can see. I see many, many people who act as if option 1 were true yet will allow specific option 2 things through such as "I believe in God, I don't believe in the supernatural." HUH? "The Holy Ghost is real, but if you see ghosts you should check in to a hospital." Again, Huh? I also see some who will believe in the paranormal to a fault and scoff at science completely ... until they get sick and need medical care. Anyways, I am rambling. I do that, and I'm sorry. My main point here was to try to illustrate a feeling I have that just because something may be outside of the human ability to detect, does not mean that it doesn't exist. We could have things constantly surrounding us that we unable to see, hear, smell taste or touch. Examples are everywhere. Blow your dog whistle, you can't hear it but your dog will. The sound is 'real' to him but not to you. It's not real to your neighbor either because he/she didn't even realize that you'd blown the whistle. that doesn't make it non-existent. |
