Sound levels.

By Underdog505 at May 23, 2006 - 7:03pm | Suggestions

Hi folks,
I just have one observation that I would like to make. The sound levels during the show are sometimes inconsistant. I listen to the show alot on my ipod at work. I have to crank up the volume to hear you guys sometimes. What's very painful is when you guys get exited about something and start talking loud- it kills my freakin' ears. Other that buying some special headphones, is there a way to make the sound levels consistant?

PS- The show rocks always!!

Limiter/ Compressor

By GRANITE STATE P... on June 9, 2006 - 9:08am

What you want is a Compressor/ Limiter, a rackmount is about $100 or so new for a basic.
Either loop it I/O as a wash effect on your mic's or master, or run it post mix then out to your broadcast 'out' signal.
It will allow you to set parameters to boost and limit your mix.
I may be telling you something you already know, if so my apologies.
But that would be an easy fix for inconsistent levels, it's an indispensable tool in broadcasting, most production software has these plug-in's as well, but I recommend a good 'ol Rackmount for the overall mix, especially for Live stuff.

Thanks GSP...

We do have one...it appears to be working (lights are flashing) but we haven't quite got the hang of it yet.

Sound/ Mic's

By GRANITE STATE P... on June 15, 2006 - 7:40pm

I think the recent show's sound really good, the noise level is good and low, your voices have enough clarity and low end without getting muddy.
It's hard to compress a recording that much into files and maintain good freq. bandwidth.
What kind of mic's do you use? There are some really nice condenser mic's out there for short cash. I recommend the Marshal MXL series, the V63M is Very nice for the money (about $99). I buy allot from 'Musicians Friend', they like to give freebies!
I do Studio Production for a living, so I'm constantly buying and trying new gear.

Mics

By Doug on June 15, 2006 - 7:48pm

Shure something-or-others...lemme see...like these: http://www.microcenter.com/single_product_results.phtml?product_id=0237744

Though I think we paid more than $29.99 so perhaps the next one up from there? I'm not in the studio so I'm not positive.

I was looking at condenser mics. I want a decent one for EVP. I mean, we've got the board and recording equipment, after all! I tend to shop at Zzounds.com when I get stuff, so I'll have to check out Musician's Friend to see what all they have!

Yo Yo....

By ScottL on May 23, 2006 - 7:21pm

Yo Yo....trust me, that is something that I am working on. I am really trying to find a method to make all the levels stay consistent. We have some new toys here that we are tweaking on still to try and level everything out. Please, just give us time, I know EXACTLY what you are talking about and I want us to have the best sounding output we can give you. Thanx for the feedback.... :)
