Classic Ghostly Talk

By jnt78 at May 16, 2006 - 11:47am | Suggestions

I don’t know that this will be popular, but I miss the Old Vintage ghostly talk. Shows that explored issues and paranormal happenings. Now it seems it’s about this groups outing or sometimes music or all of these people who are in these groups and their foray into exploring the paranormal. That’s cool and all every once in a great while, but I miss the first year style of ghostly talk. You took a topic and you explored it and discussed it. I listened to hear ScottL and Doug, and now it seems like everyone else in the world is on with them. This is just my opinion, so I figured I would express it. But I hope maybe in the future you can return to the Original format for Ghostly Talk. Because personally (no offence to any of the other people who contribute to the show) I listened to the show for Doug and Scott and the occasional interesting guest (as in 1 or 2 people, not a whole group) Mostly it was the way you guys could tell a story and give interesting viewpoints on things like dreams, and ball lightning and hauntings. I miss that Ghostly Talk. I honestly have no idea what the shows are about anymore since before I could tell by the title of the file\show, and now the title leaves me clueless. Just My 2 Cents. Later Guys.

You Know I Agree

By Elmer on May 17, 2006 - 10:49am

I know am gonna get alot of slack for this but i agree i miss the old gt to i get so bored with 3 guest ten topics and a midget serving a beer its kinda why i stopped listening and do the news and thats it and of late ive stopped that just cause i can rember when gt was all about the information and getting it out there now it seems like a circus and oo ma look at me am on the radio bull crap that ive heard over the last year and i hate to say it the musical guest is so pointless yes i am a muscian but am here for the paranormal not pimp my music which i could but like i said am in it for the paranormal not my other projects.

I know this sounds a bit harsh its not meant to be but i loved when gt covered one topic and had one guest about that topic and explored it that to me was greatest thing now its so broad and you guys never finish a conversation i know how it is to leave someone in suspence but come on this isnt a soap opera where we gotta guess whos goin to die or whos prego just finish the damn interview for christ sakes it gets so annoying when yer into a discussion that you have to cut the person off to go to someone else. Also i gotta agree when i first listened to gt i loved when they just covered a topic and no guest was on and they talked about it was cool to hear other oppinions on stuff was cool as hell to me now its so blah and bland. So if you guys wanna get the cross and nails cause ive said this stuff then so be it but rember i was a fan first before i was the news guy.

Now, now

By Doug on May 17, 2006 - 12:29pm

Really, now.

the musical guest is so pointless yes i am a muscian but am here for the paranormal not pimp my music

Elmer, are you suggesting to do away with the musical breaks? Please present an argument for this so I can weigh it against the advantages of having them. You see, right now musical breaks do what they always have done--give us some time during the show to do things we cannot do while on the air and, best of all, highlights an independent artist. You see, Ghostly Talk is an INDEPENDENT effort and it's only fitting to give back to that community/genre when possible. It's possible, so why not?

That's what I'm asking you, Elmer...why not? What would the advantages be to dropping indie music from GT?

No Doug....

By ScottL on May 17, 2006 - 12:41pm

I think what Elmer was referring to was the couple of Musician's who have been on the show as of late. (i.e. Oderus Urungus, Wendy Rule, E.V.P., King Fowley, Bill Lonero, Midnight Syndicate)

To be honest, it was never planned the way it has been going, it never has...In most of the cases we were approached by the parties to drop onto the show. We all thought they had something interesting to say/talk about. Plus we thought it was fun to talk to some outside sources who may not have their finger on the pulse of the paranormal community like most of the people we have on the show. I do agree they all kinda fell into the schedule alittle to close together, but I have no regrets abotu it really. Perception is everything, and I find it fascinating how different people perceive paranormal experiences. Musician or not....

Bottom line is, if you want to blame anyone, blame me. I am doing 98% of the booking now.... ::ducks under his desk:: :)

Musical guest

By Doug on May 17, 2006 - 2:34pm

Oh, is that all?

Well then it is a moot point and I shouldn't have addressed it at all.

Balance

By jnt78 on May 17, 2006 - 1:08pm

If I can add a little more to the discussion, I think perhaps one thing you could try is a balance of the Classic and New formats, so that in a way, everyone is getting something they like, listeners and Hosts alike. I don’t think it is anyone’s fault; it is just the direction the show has drifted. But the beauty of Doug and ScottL being the hosts, is that they can turn it around, or over or inside out, because you guys are the show, and you can make it over any way you choose to.

Format Exploration

By Doug on May 16, 2006 - 9:12pm

I do too! I call it "Classic Ghostly Talk," though, not vintage...but I do have an empty spot in my heart for that format. It is very rare, but occasionally I do declare after a segment something to the effect of, "that was like classic Ghostly Talk." I treasure those segments.

From this side of the monitor, I see a LOT of suggestions. They come in the form of reviews, email, hate email (alot), and notes tied to rocks thrown onto the Haunted Winery grounds (which really makes the Dobermans go berzerk!). For every suggestion in the vein of "more classic GT," there's several "that was a great guest" or "stop talking over the guest and let them speak" or "can you have so-and-so on the show" type comments.

It's absolutely impossible to keep everyone happy all of the time.

So that brings me to the question, do I like the many-guests format? My answer is that I thoroughly enjoy the classic GT format and I'm okay with the many-guests format. Please keep reading...I'm going to explore this a bit more before posting it.

So most feedback we get supports having guests. And I can only begin to describe how awesome it is to have talked on the phone with some of the folks we've had on the show. Some of the folks we've chatted with are dreams come true. Most of the folks we've chatted with are amazing for their contributions to either our hobby or the paranromal in general. My personal favorite kind of show--even better than Classic GT style--is when we either take callers or talk to folks in Ghost Hunting groups. It's EXTREMELY RARE now, so I insisted that October be GT's "Ghost Month" and be primarily dedicated to members of Ghost Hunting groups. It worked two Octobers ago and came pretty close last October.

The unpublished (but widely known) format of the show now is more akin to a party than that of a talk show. We tell each and every guest that they we will approach the show as if we're all at a party and happened to sit on a couch near each other and started chatting. When I brief an upcoming guest, I specifically encourage interrupting us, though they seldom do because this is not a typical format by any means and first-time guests cannot get used to it before the segment is up. I tell them they can be certain that we will interrupt them. Just like at a party we all happened to attend.

It's fairly obvious that it's easier to do a show with guests and/or callers. Have we gotten lazy?

You've got me thinking, jnt78. Can we still do a classic-style GT show anymore? How would it be received by folks who expect and adore guests?

One of the greatest things about having a show is that we can explore such things. It would be very interesting to attempt a classic-style GT. No guests, no callers.

I know GT is booked a couple months in advance. Such an exploration couldn't happen for awhile...but it could indeed happen! I've decided while typing this that I will have a chat with ScottL about it.

In the meantime, there are excellent podcasts and shows out there with the no-guest, no-caller style. I beg and plead with EVERYONE to please give other indie shows a chance to win some of your listening time. In my forum and email signature I talk about being a fan of everything Indie. I truly am. Yes, the inexplicable successes that GT has had helps me promote my little pet causes (indie music, indie podcasts/broadcasts, LPFM and the like), but in those I am exactly what I appear to be: a devout fan and staunch supporter of independent efforts.

GT currently costs me personally $97.24 per month to maintain. That's only the predictable recurring costs of GT. I truly, deeply, and wholly wish that money was matched tenfold or fiftyfold or hundredfold by folks buying indie music (featured on the show or not), and buying paranormal books (by authors featured on the show or not), and attending paranormal conferences (such as CPRI's, or the upcoming GLPR picnic, or the Mid-South Paranormal Conference, or the Oklahoma Bigfoot Conference), or a DVD put out by some ghost hunting group, or supporting anything independent. Does that work? I don't know--I just have to believe that it can happen, I suppose.

Part of my paying for GT to continue just might have some pull with exploring formats. If it does, you just might get a show (or two or ten) in the future done in the Classic Ghostly Talk style!

Oh, and if YOU start a podcast, send me the link because I just might subscribe. And it won't bother me if you start a podcast to one-up Ghostly Talk (that's been threatened many times and perhaps even done, though nobody has sent me a subscription link that I know of yet). What I care about is getting more independent productions and options out there. Do it! Do it better than we can! Start each show with, "I despise Ghostly Talk; it's crap and we know it. They know it too because I told them so!" I'll still applaud and respect you for getting out there and putting yourself in the public eye and doing something other than watching reality shows on TV while sipping exorbitantly priced Name Brand cappuchino frappachino ole whipped beverages. I would even promote your podcast on Ghostly Talk for those who haven't found you yet and haven't seen the light. But if you hire a producer with X number of years in "the business," or get yourself an agent, or charge for your downloads...well then you've found the line in the bitscape that I cannot support.

I don't think that's what you meant by your post, jnt78, but I'm taking the opportunity to construct a soapbox and put out a call to action!

Ummmm, now that that's over, I'll go have a chat with ScottL about a Classic GT formatted show... (sorry 'bout laying the rant on ya, but I am passionate about my pet causes you know)

Doug,First off, let me say,

By jnt78 on May 17, 2006 - 9:55am

Doug,

First off, let me say, I have been a fan of Ghostly Talk for its entire run. Second let me say, you and ScottL have a great chemistry and hearing more of the two of you (which is totally Classic Ghostly Talk) would be so awesome. Third, I totally appreciate the time and thought you put into your response to my post. I feel that it is such a great thing that the show allows you guys to explore your pet projects as well as the GT subject matter. I am in full support. That is what your show and Podcasts are all about, and you guys were neck deep in it before it was the newest best thing. This is why you two rock so much.

I do deeply appreciate your comments on my post because I realize that you get emails and posts, and sometimes rocks with notes, tossed at you all the time every day. I am glad I was able to connect with you on this common ground. I respect your current format completely and realize with time there will be progression to other avenues for the show. I am certainly not trying to induce change where it is not wanted, because its not my show, but I do know that there are probably a lot of people out there (including you) who so very much enjoyed the Classic GT Style. I also want to state that I have enjoyed many of your special guest shows. (Hello Sid Haig!!!)

I don’t think you guys have gotten lazy at all; you are too busy to be lazy, not to mention running the show. I think the main part that I would say I miss, is the personal connection I got from the Classic format. It was like walking into a room and chilling with your 2 close friends and listening to stories, be they scary or interesting (the stories not the friends). That is the feeling I miss the most.

I am a huge fan of Podcasts, and I have a list of 15 or so I visit daily to check for new episodes. The subjects they cover are all over the board. None quite cover the subjects you and ScottL did with quite the gusto, but they all have their strong points. Ghostly Talk was the very first internet radio show I ever listened to (which is why it is special to me) and it is what inspired me to seek out more shows and to seek out all of these podcasts I enjoy today. It also inspired me to start developing a podcast of my own, which is why it is funny you mentioned it in your reply. (ScottL, I think Doug is hiding Psychic powers from you!) When it is up and running I will let you know, and of course give a shout out to you and ScottL and the whole GT Crew. Credit where credit is due and you guys deserve it.

This whole explosion of creative commons and free access blows my mind, and I am so happy that anyone can now put their ideas out there (Good for the Indie crowd) and it is free and easy to find, which is how it should be.

I know I am probably repeating myself but I hope I have conveyed how thankful I am we have a dialog about these subjects and how much I appreciate your thoughts on my original post and finally how much respect and admiration I have for you and ScottL for doing what you do. I look forward to discussing it more in the near future with you and please feel free to rant as much as you want, because I am very interested in what you have to say. I promise to keep my own rants shorter for ya because frankly, my fingers are exhausted.
