Dr. Andrew Nichols V. Paranormalist Feeb-Geeks?

By Max Szabo at April 10, 2006 - 9:50pm | General

Gosh, that was an neat interview.

Always interesting to see the cold, hard, icy logic of the scientific method (which, it should be remembered, doesn't hate you - it just doesn't care about your feelings one way or the other, which is why it works) being applied to the equation. (And more to come soon, with Jim Houran on April 23rd.)

I am especially jazzed by the idea that gross paranormal events (like apparitions and physical interventions by unseen forces) can be regarded as extrinsic manifestations of psychological (and in the old Freudian sense, psychic) states and dilemmas on the part of observer-participants, including investigators.

I am especially conscious of the difficulty that this idea will have as regards the supposed separation of investigator and the investigated.

Also, the idea that paranormal enthusiasts may actually resist the 'solving' of epoch-long mysteries like hauntings and after death communications is very illuminating.

Dream theory is a rich and complicated world, but one with which I have some familiarity. This is quite intriguing.

I do think, however, that Dr. Nichols may want to consider the possibilities that open up when one regards spacetime from a multiversal perspective (as advocated by Paul "there is no death" Eno) which permits many possible life cycles for any given person, including deaths and survivals and divergent (or convergent) resonances, and which may manifest at some level of the psyche and – it seems – physical world.

Good stuff GT crew, and nice going Doc!

Pleasantly shocked

I was absolutely shocked when I realized what Dr. Nichols was all about. And I liked it!

I realized what was going on just before I asked the question, "Do you believe in life after death?" After that my head was spinning with possibilities.

Keeping it in perspective is oftentimes difficult...and with the ghost hunting season upon us (Spring is the beginning of the time where one can stay out all night without getting frostbite), I'm glad to have chatted with Dr. Nichols.

I do not agree with everything he said...but I am most certainly aware of more possibilities now. For that I am humbled and thankful! Dr. Nichols has earned my respect.

Hey Max...I'm glad you mentioned Paul Eno. I must say I find his explanation of the paranormal palatable and sensible. I'm struggling with a few points, but Paul may be on to something.

Uh huh. Our paranomal diet needs more fiber, less sugar.

Hi Doug!

It was a very good interview (and, BTW, you and Scott are riffing back and forth a charm these-a-days...)

Regarding Eno's quantum-compatible, many-world (and therefore many-versions-of-you) framework, I was discussing a near-death experience with an acquaintance recently, which may have bearing upon the idea, and I'd like to share it.

This person had - when younger - managed to get themselves lodged in a dangerous, elevated position, and could easily have fallen and died. As a result, presumably, they have developed fairly serious vertigo, and cannot physically approach upper-story balconies, or doors to the same.

I began to wonder if - in another version of the multiverse - this individual had actually fallen and died, and that the trauma of that death was (somehow) resonating across into 'our' version of the multiverse, where this - very much living - individual still experiences a deep, unconscious trauma at the 'memory' of their own death...
