Neat-o...a negative review!

By Doug at March 18, 2006 - 3:48pm | General

Trolling through the internet, I ran across a negative review of Ghostly Talk on iTunes.

Unfortunately, it was posted anonymously. Which means we cannot learn from the poster by listening to his/her podcast to do what we do better. The review is rather light on constructive criticism while heavy on base negativity.

I can handle negative reviews. We get them all the time! But really, there ought to be an unwritten de-facto rule that if you're gonna post a negative review you must:

1. Not be anonymous (if you feel that way, you feel that way...but SIGN your words, dammit!)

2. Offer constructive criticism (how can anyone learn and grow without it?)

This particular review that I found on iTunes is just plain silly. We cannot learn from it. It appears to be more out of spite (perhaps political?) than anything.

HOWEVER, I am very glad the poster took time to listen to Ghostly Talk! Even though he/she feels Ghostly Talk is not his/her cup of tea, the person is out there giving independent media a chance. I respect that. I hope that he/she does find something that does enlighten and entertain them a the manner to which he/she enjoys. I trust there is something in independent media that will fit that bill.

Among my favorites are:

Hometown Tales
The Paranormal Podcast
Mysterious Universe

(there are more, but those come to mind offhand as being available on iTunes)

All of the shows I listen to are different from each other and different from Ghostly Talk. That's what independent media is about: DIVERSITY of programming.

Celebrate and revel in the freedoms the internet has allowed all of us amateur broadcasters and enthusiasts. But please don't abuse those same freedoms (as the anonymous lambaster did).

As they say, "There is no such thing as bad publicity".

That being said, I agree the poster should have left some type of identity, even if false. A negative review should be used as a way to inform those that you are reviewing on how to make it a better show for everybody. You can't improve if you don't know you are doing it "wrong" or subpar.

Off on a tangent: I also listen to those same podcasts. There never seem to be enough of them out there with this type of subject matter. Hometown Tales was in fact the podcast that got me hooked on the idea of downloading them. I even bought an iPod so I didn't have to tediously transfer them to my PDA to listen to at work.

I also listen to:
Out There
Beyond Science
P.I.D. Radio
Phenomenon The Supernatural
The Paracast

Congratulations

This is great news for GT. Having a great show is one thing but having a great show that is worthy of being hated (at least to some degree), Now that's something. Just think of all those movies that the critics hated, that went on to gross more money than God owns. Hell even classical physics says "for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction." Being bumped with a little hate, only nudges you into a little love. Tension makes the world go 'round, and baby, the GT world just got a little boost.

Congratulations.

My Opinion?

By ScottL on March 19, 2006 - 12:09pm

You can't please everyone and I gave up a long time ago trying to. There will always be someone hiding under a pile of dead fish waiting for their big chance to run their mouth. These are the same people that would soil themselves when faced with the chance to speak frankly to any of us personally. So in closing:

Chin Up, Darlin'

As a Live Journal user for the last five years, I quickly learned that the internet is a wonderful way for self esteem deprived, jealous, cowardous, negitive people to get their anonymous jabs in without actually having to back them up with silly things like a name, a face or an identity of any kind.

To me an anon poster or commenter's opinion carries about as much weight at the pixels it was typed with.

Besides... to borrow a much over-used cliche... you can't please everyone and why would you want to? The people that enjoy the show are the kinds of people you'd want to have around you and the ones that dont "get" it are the drips that wouldn't likely have a place in your life anyhow!

Right?!

Anonymity

By Doug on March 19, 2006 - 11:55am

Right on!

Going the anonymous route, however, along with not providing constructive criticism, may be an emotional quick-fix for the poster--but that's all. At that point it's more like a power play than anything. "I have the power to besmirch your reputation, and I'm gonna do it! Muuhahahahaha!" It doesn't actually help anyone or anything except their already questionable ego (however small that may be).

There's a new review up today that wasn't submitted anonymously. In a bizarre twist of fate, the new one could have been posted anonymously. While it's more of a neutral-rating review (not the best, not the worst rating), IT OFFERS CONSTRUCTIVE ADVICE! The poster would like to hear more about ghosts. I agree! I would, too. Rather a good comment that could have been posted at the worst rating (and maybe anonymously, though I and everyone must question the motives behind anonymous negative reviews)--and because it offers clear and actionable criticism, it would not have been an abuse of the very freedoms that make it possible for them to even hear the independent show(s) they comment about.
