Why do ghosts hang out in basements?

By Sketcher at January 31, 2007 - 2:30pm | Haunted Places

I've always wondered about something, so hopefully someone here has an answer to this question. Why is it that we always hear about ghosts in basements, or peering out from closets, or all these corners and so on. Is there a reason they'd be in these parts of houses in general? Is it because it's dark? If I was a ghost I think I'd much prefer to hang out in the living room where the tv is on at least or a sunroom where I could stare outside. LOL...seriously!

The question came to me because I've always been afraid of basements. You know, big brother scaring his little sister with "woooo...watch out for the ghooooooooosts....". Now I'm almost 40 and I STILL freak out in the basement. My hubby goes out of town and I won't go downstairs to do laundry in our NEW house! Ok, quit laughing at me. So yesterday I HAD to go downstairs and the question popped into my mind "why the hell am I afraid of the basement? If there are ghosts, they could come upstairs, too." hahaha.

Any thoughts? Is it maybe just hollywood and movies that have planted this basements = ghost pads mentality?

Basement theories

By Valerie C on April 4, 2008 - 7:26am

Hi, I'm new here.

I have a couple of theories about basements. We assume the ghosts are in the basement because we're afraid of what's hiding there, watching us and waiting to trap us. The reason is this:

1. Unless you have a walk-out, basements have very few escape routes. Usually just the one set of stairs. If someone (or some thing) is between you and the stairs, on the stairs, or under the stairs, well, you're SOL. We Nervous-Nellies are always at least a little aware that basements are potential traps. We become hyper-alert to every sound, every movement, and in general scare ourselves silly.

2. Basements are literally alive with insect activity. If you feel like you're being watched in your basement, it's probably because you are. It doesn't matter if your basement is finished and furnished, it's still an ideal place for spiders and ear wigs and other nasties. I think in an evolutionary sense, we're more aware than we think we are of insect odors, small noises, and small movements.

So, that's my theory. I feel for you and your fear of basements. Try wearing headphones, it will help calm down that state of hyper-awareness. It helped me, anyway.:)

I don't think it is the fact

By Poppy on January 15, 2008 - 12:02pm

I don't think it is the fact that Ghosts like to stay in basements, I think it is the fact that a lot of times new homes are built on old foundations, or over a long forgotten grave, perhaps even on a site that has a history that nobody knows about. Also the basement is a place in most homes that is a bit darker than the rest and then as we grow up theres the movie factor, the monster is always in the basement.

Okay, so....

By Sketcher on April 30, 2008 - 11:02am

Okay, so basically it's probably not that ghosts are drawn to the dark or the energy is different down in basements causing some kind of ghostly hang out, but really it's more the movie factor and our own fear of the dark, ya think?

I took a great picture of our basement, loaded with orbs. I know, I know, some think orbs are ghosts while others say they're dust particles caught on film. Who knows. As long as they don't grab my feet when I run up the stairs screaming.
