Condenser Microphone

By Doug at October 29, 2006 - 9:48pm | General

Talking to Barbara from GIS, we found that condenser microphones are still thought of as worthwhile because of their clarity.

The entry-level condenser mic I spoke about is a Samson C01U. Note there are two options on the site: just the mic and a podcast pack. The difference is that the podcast pack includes the shock mount (a $29.95 accessory), a stand, and some software all in a nifty hard-side case. The podcast pack doesn't seem to be in stock as I write this, and it'll be just under a month before they get any in.

I'd suggest the Samson C01U ($79.95), the shock mount ($29.95), and a this stand or this stand ($14.95) for a grand total of $124.85 plus S&H (possibly) and perhaps sales tax if you're in New Jersey.

As for software, I use Audacity.

I have no affiliation with Zzounds.com or Samson other than being a customer.

Condensors are nice, but the one's with the USB built in can be problematic if you are planning to do any mixing of other sources (ie. phone interface, music etc.) Of course the mics without usb built in have disadvantages too. You have to have phantom power on a mixer to power them and you still need a soundcard to get the audio into your computer. If it's a single mic show with no heavy mixing requirements I'd go with the Samson otherwise gimme a standard condensor and a mixer anytime.

It's the clarity for EVP recording

By Doug on November 18, 2006 - 8:14pm

You are absolutely right, ScottK.

I'm thinking about the clarity of the condenser mic for EVP recording.

Hook it to a laptop with a couple hours of battery life and record away. Crystal clear recordings.

For a podcast...it's really only useful as you said for a single mic show. I can find nothing as flexible as a hardware solution (mixing board, mics, etc.) for anything more complex.

Continuous temperature monitor

By Doug on October 31, 2006 - 9:48am

I saw one of these in action last night at the Fenton Hotel ghost hunt.

Chris B. of Grimstone, Inc. , had one of these portable temperature and humidity data loggers.

The idea is that this device simply takes a temperature reading every so many seconds or minutes (you set it to what you want) and remembers it so that when you plug the device into your computer you can see a graph of all the data it has captured. Got a spike or a dip in your graph? See if it corresponds to inexplicable phenomena!
